The year is 2225. Earth is at war. Rather, the human race is at war with a religously-driven group of aliens known as the Covenant. The Covenant believe that humans are an abomination, and that it is the gods will for them to be destroyed.
In desperation and shear curiosity, the human forces (United Nations Space Command) have created a race of geneticlly inhanced super-soldiers known as Spartans. But a suprise attack from the Covenant wiped out all but one Spartan, John 117, known only to the marines by his rank of Master Chief.
Master Chief has single handedly killed more Covenant soldiers that the entire UNSC together. Known to Covenant as the "Demon", he has been awarded every medal possible except the Prisoner of War.
The Covenant plan to use artificial ring-worlds known as Halo, to wipe out humankind as we know it. After the destruction of the ring Instalation 04 at the hands of Masrer Chief, the Covenant leaders, known as Prophets, take a disgraced Elite Fleet Comander, and turn him into the Arbiter, a Covenent holy warrior. After the death of the Prophet of Regret, again at the hands of Master Chief, the Prophet of Truth decides that the elites can no longer guarantee their saftey, and appoints the Brutes to take the place of the elites, and orders all elites killed.
Many Elites escape, including the Arbiter, and join the UNSC, partially because of revenge, and because the now see that Halo, instead of their salvation, will be their doom. The Master Cheif and the Arbiter often team up, which eventually results in the Arbiter killing Truth (Prophet of Mercy was killed by a parasitic rase living on Halo known as the Flood), but not before Truth kills Commander Miranda Keyes by shooting her in the back with a Brute Spiker.
During an attemp to destroy the Ark, an artificial world actting as remote activation base for all other Halo rings, the escaped moniter of Installation 04, 343 Guilty Spark kills Sargeant Johnson in an attempt to save the Ark. Master Chief proceeds to destroy Spark, and destroys the Ark. While the ship In Amber Clad escapes, it is severly damged during the jump to Slip Space, and falls apart, leaving Master Chief stranded in space with the AI Cortana. The rest of In Amber Clad escapes, and a ceremony is held on Earth, with the Arbiter present, to remind the Humans of those who died to save Earth.
